Musée Militaire Genevois

Did you know?

In the 1970s, a small group of Geneva residents, incluing both civilians and military personnel, set their sights on creating a museum dedicated to military history. Among them was Clément Bosson, a passionate collector and expert in Swiss weapons, who was so committed to the project that he boldly presented himself as the curator of a museum that did not yet exist. This audacious move allowed him to acquire valuable items ahead of schedule, which would go on to enrich the museum’s future collections. Tragically, Bosson, who believed so strongly in the museum’s mission, passed away before its inauguration, taken too soon by illness.

The Musée militaire genevois, founded in 1984 by an association, preserves and showcases the military history of the canton of Geneva from 1813 to the present day. Its collection of uniforms, equipment, weapons, posters, photographs and documents — presented in their historical context — provides a vivid insight into two centuries of history.

The museum welcomes anyone interested in the contemporary history of Geneva or in military history more broadly. While its primary focus is on the canton, its perspective naturally extends to the national level — since the army has been a federal institution since the 19th century — and even to a supranational level, reflecting the Swiss army’s role in securing organisations, infrastructure, and major events in ‘International Geneva’.

In addition to its collections, the museum disseminates its research through its website, La Lettre du Musée, published several times a year, and Le Brécaillon, an annual journal devoted to the military history of Geneva, Switzerland and the world.
