Musée International de la Réforme

Did you know?

The Musée International de la Réforme celebrates, among other major figures, Martin Luther, Catherine de Medici, Théodore de Bèze, and Agrippa d’Aubigné. Two adopted Genevans — a reformer and a soldier-poet — take centre stage, occupying the rooms of this landmark presentation. Did you know that their bones can also be found beneath the museum? Until Maison Mallet was built in 1724, the former cloister of Cathédrale Saint-Pierre occupied this space and, occasionally, prestigious burials were held there.

This museum is the only secular museum in the world entirely devoted to the history of the Reformation and Protestantism.

The museum, which is spread across 12 vibrant rooms filled with objects to discover, presents a diverse collection that includes paintings, historical objects, antique books, engravings, and audiovisual media. Highlights include two portraits of Martin Luther by Lucas Cranach, a personal letter from John Calvin, and a poignant testimony from Dietrich Bonhoeffer.

The museum offers a cultural experience accessible to all, thanks to free audio guides available in fourteen languages, as well as augmented reality animation that brings 15 major works from the collection to life.
