Musée des Sapeurs-Pompiers de la Ville de Genève

Did you know?

It all started with a somewhat unusual bet between retired firefighters from the Geneva Fire & Rescue Service (SIS). What if we created a museum? No one could have imagined how far the idea would go… And yet, after immense effort and countless hours of sacrificed rest, the museum opened in 2008, built with their own hands. The wood came from trees felled by Storm Lothar in December 1999, carefully crafted by skilled carpenters. Another unique feature is the mezzanine floor, engraved with the names of the staff who contributed to the history of the SIS.

The Musée des Sapeurs-Pompiers Genevois traces the evolution of the fascinating profession of firefighting across 1,000 m² of exhibition space. Visitors can explore a collection of machinery dating back to the 18th century, along with vehicles, various devices, equipment, and uniforms. What truly sets this museum apart, however, is the presence of retired guides, who are both professionals and volunteers. They share detailed insights into their work and passionately recount countless stories and anecdotes from their decades of experience, making every visit a unique and engaging experience.

The museum honours those who have shaped the evolution of this profession – the veterans whose dedication laid the foundation for today’s structures and resources, the men and women who serve with the intense commitment required to carry out countless missions, and those who have been wounded or lost their lives in the line of duty.
