Musée de Carouge

Did you know?

The garden of the Musée de Carouge is one of those hidden gems that delight visitors from the moment they step inside. Sheltered by the surrounding façades and walls, it enjoys a unique microclimate more reminiscent of the gentle warmth of Tuscany than the harsher climate of Geneva. This is likely why a magnificent olive tree from Provence thrives here alongside the few palm trees, creating a little southern oasis in the heart of the Sardinian city.

In 2004, this Mediterranean setting was the scene of an unusual experiment. As part of the Tomatoes & Co exhibition, around fifteen rare varieties of tomatoes were grown there.

Rooted in Carouge’s unique history, at the crossroads of Sardinian, Genevan, and Swiss heritage, the Musée de Carouge is a living museum of art and history. Whilst it has no permanent exhibition, it houses a rich collection of ceramics, visual arts, and historical objects, and offers a diverse programme of temporary exhibitions accessible to all. As a space of memory, creation, and transmission, the museum fosters a dialogue between tradition and innovation, showcasing Carouge’s craftsmanship whilst also supporting contemporary artistic creation.

The museum is free, welcoming and engaging, and has a reach far beyond the Sardinian city, particularly through its publications and the International Ceramics Competition.
