MEG – Musée d’Ethnographie de Genève

Did you know?

The MEG building, designed in 2014 by Zurich-based architecture firm Graber and Pulver, draws inspiration from distant cultures, translating a tribute to the world’s diversity into forms and materials. Its silhouette evokes the elegance of South Asian pagodas, while the woven metal cladding recalls a precious case safeguarding treasures from afar. Diamond-shaped openings, reminiscent of a mashrabiya, filter light like delicate architectural lace. Inside, the triangular library conveys the intimacy of a tent, and the grand, monumental staircase extends an invitation to journey, echoing the timeless geometry of Egypt’s pyramids.

With its pagoda-inspired architecture, the MEG is a museum devoted to world cultures, exploring the pressing issues of contemporary human societies. It houses over 75,000 objects and 200,000 documents, offering a distinctive perspective on cultural diversity and global challenges. As a truly living institution, the MEG fosters critical reflection on essential themes such as decolonisation, sustainability, and the interdependence between humans and the environment. The museum, which was recognised with the European Museum of the Year Award in 2017 and numerous other sustainability accolades, is a vibrant space for dialogue, encounters, and debate.

The museum looks to the future, inviting visitors to reflect on contemporary challenges and envision the world of tomorrow.
