Did you know?

Wollemia nobilis, or Wollemi pine, first appeared over 200 million years ago and lived alongside the dinosaurs, but was long thought to be extinct. After being remarkably rediscovered in 1994 in an isolated gorge within Wollemi National Park in Australia, there are now only around 100 of these extraordinary trees, and they are classified as critically endangered. To aid its conservation, the Jardin Botanique de Genève participates in the Wollemi Pine Metacollection Project, an international preservation initiative. Six specimens have been entrusted to the garden and are now thriving in Geneva!

The Conservatoire et Jardin Botaniques de Genève are among the largest and most prestigious botanical gardens in the world.

Their wealth lies in world-class collections, including a herbarium of over six million specimens, a virtually exhaustive library on the plant and fungal kingdoms, and a living collection of more than 11,000 organically cultivated species, many of which are rare or endangered. These treasures, together with cutting-edge scientific research, deepen our understanding of living organisms and guide efforts to preserve them.

Throughout the year, a diverse programme of activities invites the public to explore the collections, learn about ongoing research, and engage in discussions on biodiversity. The mediation area, a space for exchange and hands-on experimentation, offers an immersive introduction to the world of botany, with opportunities for microscope observation, herbarium sheet creation, and workshops focused on plants and fungi.
