These meetings provide a space for reflection and discussion on current issues facing museum institutions.

Under the impetus of the Department of Culture and Digital Transition (DCTN), the Conference of Geneva Museums has been organising these events since June 2024.

2025 Conference: Geneva Museums in the 20th and 21st Centuries

The conference, organised by the Université de Genève (UNIGE) and the Conference of Geneva Museums, provides an overview of Geneva’s museums in the 20th and 21st centuries, their history and their prospects, and highlights current issues and questions.

It will be an opportunity to highlight the new agreement signed in March 2025 between UNIGE and the City of Geneva, as well as the new postgraduate MAS (Master’s degree in advanced studies) programme in cultural heritage (formerly Heritage Conservation and Museology).

The proceedings will be published in the twelfth volume of the Patrimoine Genevois (Georg).

2024 Conference: Museums and Power

In 2014, Geneva’s museums held a national conference to discuss ‘The challenges facing museums in the 21st century’. Ten years later, with the rapid evolution of our cultural landscape and the period of transition we are currently experiencing, a further regional conference was organised.

Under the theme ‘Museums and Power’, the 130 participants discussed the place and social and societal usefulness of museums and their future as cultural institutions.

All the discussions were filmed and are available here.
